An array of meteorological instrumentation including wind anemometers, precipitation gauges, temperature/relative humidity probes, and solar radiation sensors, which will replace sensors on the buoys currently floating in the ocean as part of the TAO (Tropical Atmosphere Ocean) array.
An amazing organized effort by everyone on the ship to deploy the test buoy by spooling line behind the floating instrument mast followed by release of a 2-ton anchor.

  Here the crane is gently lifting the test buoy above the water so that the rope does not interfere with the sensitive wind sensors on top of the mast.  

 

Note for educators: The TAO/TRITON array continues to collect data and the Ka'imimoana continues to maintain the array. Please use the TAO web site, in conjunction with this web site, the lesson plans, daily logs, the videos, and the photos to educate your students about climate, El Niño, and scientific research in general.
