The International Research Institute for Climate Prediction (IRI) (Juley 1998) - Stream 1 (Introduction to IRI) and  Stream 2 (Ground Breaking Ceremony)

The initiative to establish an international research institute for purposes of El Niņo forecasting first emerged in 1989. A concrete Proposal for an International Research Institute for Climate Prediction (IRI) and regional applications centers was completed in 1992 by an international task group and introduced by the U.S. during the United Nations Conference on Environmental and Development (UNCED) June 1992. During the conference, the U.S. invited government officials and scientists from all interested nations to join in developing an IRI. These ad hoc efforts culminated in the International Forum on Forecasting El Niņo: Launching an International Research Institute in Washington, DC in November 1995, an event that punctuated the first phase of IRI Development.  For more information, please visit the IRI website.

"Forecasting the Future: El Niņo" (April 1998) premiered in 1998 at the Explorer's Club Annual Meeting held at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York as part of the Explorer's Award given to Dr. Ants Leetmaa, Director of the NOAA Climate Prediction Center.

"Forecasting the Future: El Niņo" won, for its OGP producer Dr. John Kermond, a Creative Excellence Award for "outstanding audio visual productions" in the U.S. International Film and Video Festival in 1999.

Spanish Version
"Pronosticando El Futuro: El Niņo" was introduced by U. S. Secretary of Commerce William Daley as part of the Summit of the Americas Conference held in Santiago, Chile in 1998.
