Welcome to the NEAQS Teacher at Sea Adventure!

Kirk Beckendorf, NOAA Teacher at Sea 2004

Kirk Beckendorf and Kevin McMahon are our NOAA Teachers at Sea for the New England Air Quality Study. Kirk Beckendorf teaches science to 8th graders at Obsidian Middle School in Redmond, Oregon. Kevin McMahon teaches Chemistry and Earth Science at William E. Grady High School in Brooklyn, NY. Both Kirk and Kevin are currently at the New England Air Quality Study (NEAQS) in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. During their trip, they are visiting ground stations, participating in the activities at the operations center and going on board the NOAA ship Ronald H. Brown as it cruises in the Gulf of Maine.

Both teachers are writing daily logs, interviewing scientists, taking digital pictures and answering email as part of their Teacher at Sea adventure.

The Location

The principal study area for the NOAA research vessel Ronald H. Brown is the Gulf of Maine although an excursion out into the North Atlantic Ocean is also anticipated. The ship is sailing from Boston, MA, in early July, having a port-of-call for science discussions in Portsmouth, NH, in late July, and ending the cruise in Charleston, SC, in August. Pease International Tradeport near Portsmouth is where the NOAA WP-3D research aircraft will be based, and is also the operations center for the mission. Sites for ground-based measurements are be located throughout New England.
