Project Summaries
This meeting, which was held on April 26-28, 1999, aimed to provide a forum for researchers to share information and experiences, to demonstrate in concrete terms the value of NOAA human dimensions research in terms of advancing the knowledge base and improving societal welfare, and to identify specific future priorities for research. To accomplish these goals, the meeting focused on the following objectives:
- Determine what has been accomplished by the NOAA research program in the area of the human dimensions of climate variability with a particular emphasis on the use of forecast information.
- Identify where we can find common issues across sectors, levels of decision making, regions of the world, as they relate to the use of information and responses to climate variability.
- Provide recommendations from the human dimensions researchers to the climate forecasting and physical climate science communities.
- In terms of insights into the accessibility, credibility, interpretability, dissemination, consequences, and value of the use of climate information.
- In terms of the most appropriate mechanisms for better interaction between the human dimensions and climate science communities and between the research community and end-users.
- Identify future research priorities for the NOAA program, particularly in response to the forthcoming National Academy of Sciences report, and discuss where appropriate how the NOAA research and findings fit into broader issues of adaptation to climate.
