South East Asia
An approach similar to that developed for the Latin America & Caribbean region, and the Southern Africa region was planned for the Australasia region, with an initial planning meeting convened February 1997 in Indonesia. A small group of experts gathered to discuss plans for developing a regional capacity to forecast ENSO-related climate variability, and apply those forecasts for societal benefit in the Asia/Pacific region. Discussions during this meeting focused on the creation of a framework for the development of pilot forecasting and applications activities for the Asia/Pacific region. Also discussed were plans for the organization of a regional workshop in 1997 for extended regional development of this initiative. Participants included experts in climate research and forecasting, as well as individuals from the "user community" (i.e., potential practitioners or decision-makers from the sectors impacted by climate variability). These activities built on collaborative work done in the region over the past decade.
