Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC)
The overarching objective of NOAA/OGP’s Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) Program is to reduce the social and economic disruption associated with climate variations, including extreme events such as droughts, floods, and hurricanes, through the development of the technical, scientific and institutional capacity to forecast and prepare in advance for rainfall and temperature fluctuations associated with the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and other climatic phenomena.
Building on earlier exploratory workshops and meetings with scientists and stakeholders, as well as a decade of focused interdisciplinary research, NOAA/OGP’s LAC program seeks to encourage, facilitate and advance, where appropriate, the development of climate information and applications networks/systems throughout the Americas. These networks are intended to foster regular, cross-disciplinary exchange of climate and sectoral information to improve public safety and the management of natural resources, economic activities and public infrastructure affected by seasonal to inter-annual climate variability.
