NOAA Climate Program Office Last Updated |
NOAA/OGP Climate Information Project At the beginning of the 1997-1998 El Niño event, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Office of Global Programs (OGP) began an effort to gather, condense, and consolidate useful seasonal information for various government agencies and office collaborators. Lessons from this activity highlighted difficulties in cataloging, disseminating, and communicating various climate-related products and information. As a result, through joint support from NOAA/OGP and the USAID Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance, the Climate Information Program (CIP) was created with the mission to explore and prototype activities intended to address issues of information access. Although many of the CIP activities are ad hoc and focused towards information support for OFDA and other disaster or humanitarian collaborating entities, its lessons are often applied to more long-term efforts such as documentation of weather and climate-related impacts, development of directories of available products, as well as technical support for international collaborations such as RANET [www.ranetproject.net] . Additionally, through foreign meteorological service collaboration, the CIP provides training and support for content production and web deployment of information products. Finally, all CIP activities are designed and developed to gather and provide feedback to the producer community in the hope of improving overall information usability. |
